Following the launch of two new activities, earlier this summer, Perennial has helped 128 children living in families of people in horticulture over the last few months. The ‘Stress Free Holidays’ and ‘Back to School’ campaigns* made a real difference to the families they helped, many of whom did not previously know about Perennial.

“I’ve just opened an email that tells me we qualify for help with the living expenses during the school holidays and I wanted to just drop you a line to say thank you. Without you we wouldn’t have even known about the scheme and without you I wouldn’t have applied. You’ve no idea how much this will help. My wife has taken the boys swimming but I fully expect tears when I tell her, thank you!”

“My husband, the children and I would like to say a massive thank you to you and your team at Perennial for all of your kindness and help. We were working out our bills yesterday and we have little over fifty pounds spare for food and petrol for the next two weeks. You have helped us so much. We are over the moon with your help. I just can’t thank you all enough. It’s wonderful the work you do.”

“I am relieved and humbled that you have helped us with the children’s uniform and shoes. Thank you so much for your support and advice too. It feels financially overwhelming at the moment and we are grateful for this help.”

Julia Hayne, Director of Services at Perennial, said:

“We are delighted to have given so many families advice and information about sources of support to help them stay in work over the summer school holiday period and to have helped people meet the back to school costs many families struggle with. Where families weren’t able to access this vital support locally, we were able to provide direct access to financial help.”

Full-time holiday childcare costs an average of £124.23 per week and many parents pay more than twice as much during the holidays as they do for after-school clubs in term time. Most working parents are unable to take 13 weeks annual leave to look after children during school holiday periods and for families who receive free school meals during term time, holiday periods put extra financial pressure on household budgets. Costs associated with returning to school, such as uniform and classroom essentials, put many families under further financial strain.
